Hall of Fame Value Stocks

2002

Providian Financial (PVN) Initiated 2/02/2002 Designation Price  $3.23 Dec. 31 close $7.95
Crown Cork & Seal (CCK) Initiated 01/04/2002 Designation Price  $2.67 Dec. 31 close $6.49

Although severely overvalued, this stock (PVN) was overly damaged by September 11th. The company made some very quick consolidations and downsized immediately. They should be profitable and in an even better position for growth when the economy truly turns for the better. Providian turned out to be the #1 performer of the S&P 500 for the year 2002 with an 80% gain in share price.

Crown Cork and Seal (CCK) was another beaten down stock whose earnings were not being eroded by the recession or other world events. It has since come into favor since becoming a Behan Value Stock Pick and has gained in share value over 197% as of Dec. 31. It's ability to withstand the current downward spiral of the market has made it more than deserving of a Hall of Fame designation.

Hall of Shame Value Stock

2002

Redback Networks (RBAK) Initiated 06/19/2002 Designation Price $1.58 Dec. 31,'02 Close $0.85

Yes, even the wily stock guru fell into the tech bubble.  For some reason, namely the products produced by this company consistantly equaled or outperformed their competitors, we felt that this beaten down company would bounce back. Well, it doesn't look good. Redback remained a value pick well into 2003 before its' delisting from the Nasdaq placed what might be the final nail in its' coffin.
